Solar Power Shines in Barbados

The year-round dose of sunlight in Barbados is the inspiration for Simon Wilby’s company, Smart Power Inc. The company chose to establish its headquarters in the sunny country where the moderately tropical climate is ideal for testing and developing solar powered devices.

During the first quarter of 2009, Simon Wilby launched The Smart One to the Barbadian market. This unique aftermarket device makes use of solar power to run cell phone batteries. Through the plastic solar cells that are attached to the back of mobile phones, light energy will be converted and sent to the modified battery that comes along The Smart One package. The same technology is being considered for application to other handheld gadgets, game consoles, and laptops. The inventor recently indicated that the device will be offered to local telecommunications companies who would be adopting the same technology for their products.

The intuitive CEO knows the value of the technology he invented. Backed by his support team from Smart Power Inc., he is looking for more ways to put this technology to productive use. Among the immediate potential uses he saw is the conversion of a number of street lights in some parts of Barbados from traditional energy source to solar power.
